A Ride Out On A Colt

This was my third ride in the hills on Remington, a 4 year old mustang.  I had 100 days to gentle, train and prepare him to compete in the 100 Day Mega Mustang Challenge in Heber City, Utah in November of 2016.

It took a little work to cross the creek on our first ride out, but by this ride, he was doing better.

This third ride shows the elements that I like in a typical ride in the hills on a colt.

  • Traveling straight with the ears forward
  • Climbing up and down hills
  • Crossing obstacles and seeing new country
  • Having time to rest and relax

On a lot of rides, as on this one, I won’t challenge colts with new things.  I focus on getting them more sure of what they already know and improving on the basics.

At the 100 Day Mega Mustang Challenge, Remington placed first in Trail and second in Freestyle.  He was adopted following the competition and the owners sent  him home with me for an additional three months of training.  Remington went home in the spring  and did well on trail rides all summer.

One year ago, July 2016, he was a wild untouched mustang.
